In the final part of my review series on The Demon’s Lexicon, I fell for it, and I fell for it hard, and OH LORD, I’M SO GLAD I DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK.
After finishing up through chapter ten on Friday, I knew I could not wait another week to get through this book, so I sat down on Saturday morning and decided that I needed to complete The Demon’s Leixcon as soon as possible. AH. AHAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Below is a chronicle of that, something I’ve never had the chance to do on Mark Reads. I always space these out, and for once, I’m honestly glad I didn’t. The entire sequence involving Black Arthur is so necessary to read at once because of the relentless energy, the way one chapter flows into the next, and because OH MY GOD HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT COMING.

Some ~thoughts~:
- So, I know it’s always a thing that most of the comments in rot13 are people laughing at my suffering, but this time around, I was aware that there were plenty of folks who just plain couldn’t say anything. In fact, I knew that was a reason why there weren’t as many comments. Which is fine! I’m not doing these things for the attention they get. I don’t care. I just like reading really good things. But now I understood the unique position y’all were in: YOU LITERALLY CANNOT TALK ABOUT THE FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK WITHOUT THE SECOND HALF. YOU CAN’T!
- And it will be endlessly hilarious to me that I actually picked up on Nick’s characterization versus Alan’s, especially how that relates to Brennan’s choice to make Nick the narrator. In particular, I’d said it was risky to make Nick the narrator because he there was a chance he was unlikable to most people. I HAD NO FUCKING IDEA HOW CLOSE I WAS TO FIGURING THIS OUT. In hindsight, Brennan really made a character struggling with their humanity BECAUSE THEY WERE LITERALLY NOT HUMAN THE ENTIRE TIME. I mean, I want to go straight into The Demon’s Covenant because WHY NOT, but god, this would be such a fascinating re-read.
- HOW FUCKING GREAT IS THE START OF CHAPTER 17. I believed it. I believed that I was reading a book from the point of view of a demon who just realized it was free in a world, totally free, but confused and tormented by its experience in a human body. It was exhilarating, y’all.
- Brennan also didn’t ignore the moral weight and terror that Mae would feel upon killing someone to save her brother. That’s good writing.
- I’m just… so shocked and impressed, y’all. You should watch these videos not just to see me break, but IÂ truly had a great experience reading this book.
I don’t know off the top of my head when I’ll start the next book, as I have a few other commissions I need to complete, but it should not be more than a week. ONWARDS I GO INTO THE UNPREPARED.
