Look, I’ve been taking various forms of public transportation for years. Rats/mice on the subway isn’t anything new to me. That being said, I am continually astounded by the sheer size of the rats I see running around the MTA, how bold they are, how often I have seen rats with ENTIRE SLICES OF PIZZA dashing off to their hiding places. Seriously, Rhiow, you’ll never have trouble finding another rat to kill. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.Â

One huge, striking thing about this part of chapter one: there are so many cat behaviors rendered logically within the text that I simply cannot handle it.

Like cats PLAYING WITH THE CORPSES OF THE THINGS THEY KILL. Every cat I have had has done this! Universally! Across the board! No exceptions!!!

Well, that, and boxes. They love boxes.

Will Diane Duane explain cats and boxes???

Okay, so it is true that New York is full of fun smells, particularly in the summer? The garbage can be… interesting? I don’t know, you get used to it, so much so that I don’t really notice it. But yoooooooo, I got so many good bodegas near me that smell of breakfast sandwiches and THEY’RE SO GREAT, I LOVE THEM DEEPLY AND TRULY.

So who else had or knew a cat like Yafh? BECAUSE I SURE DID. Cats who seem like chaotic forces for violence? YEP, KNEW THOSE, TOO. Cats who have “enough scar tissue to make a new cat from”? THOSE AS WELL.Â

But it was also interesting to me that we got to meet a non-wizard cat so early into the book. I am hoping that this means Yafh will come back to play a part in the story. PLEASE, I ONLY ASK FOR ONE THING.Â

Why doesn’t Rhiow take the subway? Surely the 6 would get her there faster. She clearly knows Metro-North train schedules, so this isn’t exactly impossible. However, upon thinking about it for like five seconds, she’d probably draw more attention to herself if she did this, so perhaps it’s a bad idea.

I STILL WANT IT.

CATS ON THE TRAIN

Improving your horribly delayed trip, one head scritch at a time.

I legitimately forgot that flea powder was a thing, y’all. I don’t know when this book was written, but I’m guessing it came out before the more advanced flea killing methods? PROBABLY.

Anyway, POOR SAASH. Her owner, Abad, clearly cares about her and is emotionally attached to her, but he has no idea what he’s doing to her every time he showers her with that powder.Â

Which is what I find so captivating about what Duane is doing with this book! I’m being forced to see the world through a cat’s perspective, and that is not something I thought I’d be doing so extensively. BUT HERE WE ARE.

MhHonalh’s. OH MY GOD. I’m so happy I figured this one out.Â

SIDLING. The cats can slide into a sideways reality that makes them invisible. This explains every time my cats seemed to go missing for half the day, only to suddenly appear on the couch like they’d been there the entire time. I’M STICKING TO THIS THEORY.

Urruah is just… too much? He sleeps in dumpsters, eats McDonald’s leftovers all day, and takes great joy in fighting anything and everything. I aspire to be Urruah.Â

DEEPLY AND TRULY.

This book is going to be so much fun!
