In the sixth part of\u00c2\u00a0Carpe Jugulum<\/i>, Nanny and Agnes come to a realization as the Magpyr\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plot their next move. Intrigued? Then it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time for Mark to read\u00c2\u00a0Discworld<\/i>.<\/p>\n
THIS BOOK IS SO SATISFYING TO READ AND I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122M SO HAPPY THAT IT\u00e2\u20ac\u2122S PACED SO WELL. I know, I know, coming off of\u00c2\u00a0The Last Continent<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0is partially why I feel this way, but seriously, even if I hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t? I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m certain I would still have a blast with\u00c2\u00a0Carpe Jugulum<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0thus far.<\/p>\n
Granny\u00c2\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
My gods, the TENSION of this section is so wild. Right as I got excited to discover what the\u00c2\u00a0hell<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0Granny was up to, Pratchett switches over to Nanny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and Agnes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shared POV, and then slowly reveals the horrible, horrible truth: Granny Weatherwax might have left\u00c2\u00a0the Ramtops\u00c2\u00a0not because of some trick of the Magpyrs but because she believes that she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s being\u00c2\u00a0replaced<\/i>.<\/p>\n
I admire how Pratchett gets to that point. Sometimes, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve complained about the way he teases information in the text, but I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do that here. First, Nanny gives evidence that Granny has\u00c2\u00a0truly<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0left her cottage as opposed to taking some sort of temporary trip. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a big deal all by itself, especially given the timing of it all. How could Granny leave when the people of Lancre when they need her most? Combine that with Nanny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s seriousness, and I started\u00c2\u00a0panicking<\/i>.<\/p>\n
It was then she realized how\u00c2\u00a0really<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0serious this was. Nanny would normally leap on such a gift like a cat on a feather. Nanny could find an innuendo in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Good morning.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d She could certainly find one in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153innuendo.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a brilliant technique, isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t it? Nanny finds humor in practically everything, so what happens when she misses it in incredibly obvious puns? IT MEANS SOMETHING IS HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY WRONG. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the canary in the coal mine of this story! Well, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one of a number of them. Agnes discovers the beehive, roaring in response to\u00c2\u00a0something<\/i>, but she also makes the connection to the number three, which leads Nanny to put it all together. Long before me, I should note, even though I got a little close there before it was clear.<\/p>\n
I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m wondering, however, if Nanny is right. There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one Granny POV section in the middle of this, and Pratchett keeps Granny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s thoughts off the page for the most part. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t find out why she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s climbing above Lancre or why she isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t doing anything about the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153silence\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she observes in the valley. She just keeps going upward, to\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 something? So\u00c2\u00a0does<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0she feel like she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s being replaced, that Magrat is now the mother, Agnes is the maiden, and Nanny is the crone? Do these roles even\u00c2\u00a0fit<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0these characters? I suppose that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not the most important part of it. The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153mental\u00e2\u20ac\u009d aspect of witchery is what Granny relies on, and that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not exactly surprising. (See: headology.)<\/p>\n
It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s gotta be the darkness, that bit of Esme Weatherwax that is in\u00c2\u00a0all<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0the Weatherwax family. Maybe it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a convergence of events: the arrival of Magrat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s daughter right as the Magpyr\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s show up in Lancre, right as Granny begins to question her usefulness and purpose. But where is she\u00c2\u00a0going<\/i>?<\/p>\n
The Magpyrs<\/b><\/p>\n
Okay, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got to adjust my view of the vampyres\u00c2\u00a0again<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0because HOLY SHIT, they are conditioning themselves to be immune to everything that normally kills or disables a vampire. Y\u00e2\u20ac\u2122all. Y\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ALL.<\/p>\n \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You see?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said the Count excitedly. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You barely flinched! Sacrephobia\u00c2\u00a0can<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0be beaten! I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve always said so!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n This \u00e2\u20ac\u201c coupled with the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153phenophobia\u00e2\u20ac\u009d line and the holy water bit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c made me realize that these vampyres, through sheer willpower and stubbornness, were changing what vampires as a whole were capable of. They can drink wine. Be around garlic. Wear silver and cork. That explains that reference about crossing a river\u00c2\u00a0and<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0the issues with invitations!!! This means, of course, that Agnes and Nanny have a huge problem on their hands: they have no means of stopping these vampyres short of staking them, right? Like, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s such a violently physical solution that they can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t\u00c2\u00a0convince<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0themselves that it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work, right?<\/p>\n I DON\u00e2\u20ac\u2122T EVEN KNOW AT THIS POINT. This is unreal, y\u00e2\u20ac\u2122all, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s scary to think how quickly this takeover has happened, how much the Magpyrs control everything, and how little chance there is (as of this point of the book) of overthrowing them. What is their weakness? Can Agnes exploit her special ability in some way to get past their mind control? What about Igor? How long until\u00c2\u00a0he<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0betrays them because they refuse to be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153traditional\u00e2\u20ac\u009d vampires?
